Number of new cryptocurrencies created spikes over 150% in a year

55 minutes ago 176

The number of cryptocurrencies tracked globally has surged by more than 150% over the past year amid heightened market volatility.

Data from CoinMarketCap shows the total climbed from 23.45 million on September 4, 2025, to 59.08 million on September 2, 2026, marking a 151.94% increase.Β

Growth accelerated sharply around March 2026, when the count jumped from about 39 million to more than 46 million before reaching 52.8 million by June and a record 59 million by early September.

The boom has been driven by low-cost blockchain networks, no-code launchpads, and automated token-creation tools. Solana (SOL), Base, and BNB Chain have emerged as key hubs for crypto token launches, while the memecoin frenzy has fueled millions of speculative projects.

Survival of newly created cryptocurrencies

However, rapid growth has not translated into long-term success. Despite the rising number of cryptocurrencies, most new tokens struggle to attract liquidity or remain active for extended periods.

Interestingly, research by CoinGecko found that 53.2% of nearly 20.2 million tokens launched between mid-2021 and the end of 2025 are no longer actively traded.Β

About 11.6 million token failures occurred in 2025 alone, accounting for roughly 86% of all recorded token deaths during the period.

Data from Solana-based launchpad Pump.fun paints an even starker picture. Around 68% to 69% of tokens record their final trade on the day they launch, while roughly 80% stop trading within two days. Only about 4.55% remain active after 90 days.

The findings suggest that although cryptocurrency creation continues at a record pace, most newly launched assets fail to achieve lasting adoption.

Despite the explosion in the number of cryptocurrencies, market value remains concentrated among a small group of established assets.Β

Bitcoin’s (BTC) market dominance has remained near 60% throughout much of 2026, while Ethereum (ETH) accounts for another significant share.Β

Together with major stablecoins and a handful of large-cap cryptocurrencies, these assets represent the majority of the industry’s total market capitalization.
