In a remarkable tale of rediscovery, a Bitcoin holder going by the pseudonym Cprkrn recently managed to reclaim 5 Bitcoin, valued at over $320,000, using an AI-guided system, after nearly a decade of inaccessibility. He shared his journey on the social media platform X, detailing how Anthropic’s Claude chatbot played a pivotal role in recovering forgotten passwords tied to his dormant crypto wallet.
What role did AI play in wallet recovery?
Years prior, Cprkrn had set up a trio of complex passwords on blockchain.info, a few of which he subsequently forgot, locking himself out of his Bitcoin wallet. Over the span of eight weeks, he utilized Claude, trying billions of password combinations with no immediate success. However, he also harnessed open-source tools like BTCRecover and Python scripts to perform an exhaustive 34 billion brute-force attempts—efforts that Claude’s AI capabilities enhanced by interpreting subtle password hints.
How were alternative resources utilized?
With conventional methods proving futile, he delved into unconventional resources by examining old college notes, a dated laptop, and thoroughly poring over digital archives scattered across various devices. Importing this wealth of data into Claude, the AI combed through two Mac computers, additional external storage, and cloud resources from iCloud, Gmail, and X, scanning a total of over 1 gigabyte of data for any valuable lead.
The turning point was an old backup file unearthed from December 2019 on an aged computer. By deciphering this backup’s password with Claude’s help, utilizing a mnemonic phrase jotted in his notes, Cprkrn finally unlocked his bitcoin wallet, rediscovering the private keys long deemed lost.
Unexpected recovery of idle Bitcoin assets
Though no explicit evidence validated Claude accessing his devices, Cprkrn verified activity through a blockchain transaction link. On May 13, five transactions exuding 5 BTC were reported from the address “14VJy…ofuE6.” These bitcoins lay dormant since 2015.
Throughout this recovery mission aided by Claude, an extraordinary 3.4 trillion passwords were trialed using different recovery mechanisms, incurring merely $15 in AI service fees. While he acknowledged Claude’s effectiveness in cataloging and filtering through files, several community members speculated that the AI’s chief contribution was document retrieval, not password decryption.
Reddit user MeteorSwarmGallifrey voiced skepticism, stating Claude “did nothing beyond searching files—there’s nothing groundbreaking” in its contribution.
This episode has fueled renewed interest in leveraging AI technologies for regaining access to lost cryptocurrency assets. A notable rise is observed in services designed to unearth forgotten wallet information from old media and archival documents.
