Balance Coin Faces Sharp Decline Following Suspected BNB Chain Exploit

1 hour ago 285

The stablecoin market has encountered significant disruptions once again as Balance Coin (BLC), an algorithmic stablecoin on the BNB Chain, has plummeted by over 99% in value. This dramatic drop stems from a presumed breach involving decentralized organizations, 42DAO and GemJoin, dragging BLC from its stable $1 mark to a meager $0.001209 on July 22.

What Led to the Massive BLC Sell-off?

The incident was brought to light by blockchain security company, PeckShield, which estimated the financial impact of the attack at approximately $915,000. TenArmor, specializing in blockchain analysis, detected two notable transactions tied to 42DAO and GemJoin, contributing to this downfall. The first of these transactions saw the generation of around 4.5 million BLC tokens, which were then swiftly disposed of via PancakeSwap V2, a decentralized trading platform.

How Did the Exploit Unfold?

Approximately two hours after the initial breach, a subsequent transaction surfaced, minting another 5,900 BLC tokens using a similar method. These newly created tokens were quickly sold, further strengthening the selling pressure on the market as they entered the liquid trading pools without delay.

The unauthorized surge in minted BLC tokens drastically increased supply, leading to immense selling pressure that caused the stablecoin’s value to drop significantly below its intended stable price.

The lack of a detailed post-incident analysis from 42DAO leaves the technical reasons and full extent of the damage ambiguous. Meanwhile, both BLC holders and stakeholders in the wider Balance Protocol system face uncertainty until comprehensive findings are disclosed.

Attackers gained the ability to mint new tokens, sell them rapidly, and create intense downward pressure, which caused BLC to lose more than 99% of its value and left the precise technical root of the exploit still unidentified due to limited public disclosure from the protocol’s core teams.

This event echoes similar occurrences within the decentralized finance (DeFi) landscape. For example, in May, the cryptocurrency MAPO suffered a 96% value decrease after an exploit targeted a bridge vulnerability, allowing attackers to print unauthorized tokens and liquidate them.

  • Unauthorized tokens were minted and immediately liquidated, leading to market destabilization.
  • This event adds to a pattern of exploits in the DeFi ecosystem, spotlighting significant risks.
  • Security assessments and vulnerability management in DeFi remain critical to avoid future losses.

The ongoing vulnerability associated with unauthorized minting poses significant threats to DeFi protocols and participants, enabling attackers to manufacture tokens that exceed supply limits, sell them off quickly, and cause severe market impacts. Enhanced security measures and transparency are essential to safeguard against such exploitative events.
