Ripple has recently executed the release of 1 billion XRP as part of its monthly escrow schedule. The release was reported by Whale Alert and involved three distinct transactions from Ripple’s managed escrow accounts, specifically totaling 500 million, 400 million, and 100 million XRP, respectively.
Continuing Escrow Operations
The mechanism of locking XRP in escrow began in 2017 with Ripple securing 55 billion XRP in these accounts. The structure allows the potential release of up to 1 billion XRP every month. Remaining portions of unreleased XRP are typically rolled back into escrow for future availability, reiterating Ripple’s goal of sustainable distribution.
Ripple’s regular escrow release does not imply the entire amount will hit the market directly, as unutilized portions often return to escrow.
According to on-chain monitoring tools, there were about 32.28 billion XRP held in Ripple’s escrows as of August 31. Following the September 1st escrow unlock, this figure adjusted to approximately 31.28 billion XRP. These escrows represent about 31.28% of XRP’s total supply cap of 100 billion tokens.
Could Supply Impact Market Dynamics?
The highlighted 1 billion XRP unlock figure does not equate to an equivalent increase in market supply. Multiple previous monthly releases saw substantial portions of XRP return to escrow, minimizing immediate circulation.
- September’s total XRP release: 1 billion XRP.
- Balance at escrow on August 31: 32.28 billion XRP.
- Escrow balance post-September 1: 31.28 billion XRP.
- Percentage of maximum supply: 31.28%.
Recently, XRP experienced a price recovery, surging slightly by 1.7% within 24 hours to trade around $1.39. Looking back 30 days, XRP’s value has grown by 30.8%, and over 90 days, by 14.5%. Despite these gains, XRP’s performance since the year began remains under strain.
Moreover, the derivatives market saw over $2.3 million worth of XRP positions liquidated in the last 24 hours. This included roughly $1.5 million from short positions and around $793,000 from long ones. Ripple’s strategy in managing its escrowed XRP has implications not only for market dynamics but also for the stability and future valuation of the digital currency.
