Ethereum Foundation’s Fellowship Expands Opportunities for Open-Source Development

The Ethereum Foundation has announced the launch of the seventh round of its Protocol Development Fellowship, inviting applications until May 13. This initiative is designed to nurture new talent in the Ethereum community through a structured, six-month mentorship program from June to November. Successful applicants will benefit not only from expert guidance but also from financial allowances throughout their participation.

What does the EPF7 program offer?

The foundation intends to maintain a smaller cohort for this fellowship, ensuring more personalized mentorship and deeper engagement with projects. Applicants should possess strong skills in software engineering and a passion for open-source technology. Fellows will be immersed in activities such as developing client applications, enhancing testing protocols, refining technical documents, and conducting core protocol research.

Historically, many participants have progressed to permanent roles within Ethereum client teams, thereby fostering ongoing innovation that aligns with Ethereum’s strategic goals. Fellowship participants will be carefully chosen based on their potential for impactful contributions.

The foundation’s protocol support team emphasized, “We are prioritizing impactful contributions on participants’ projects over the number of participants in this round.”

How has Ethereum Foundation adjusted its resource management recently?

In previous months, co-founder Vitalik Buterin revealed plans to reduce the foundation’s operational expenses. At its peak, the foundation managed 172,000 ETH, with yearly outlays sometimes reaching $100 million. Recently, a significant sale has reduced holdings to 92,000 ETH. These fiscal strategies aim to sustain resource allocation prudently for the ecosystem’s longevity.

Buterin has further pledged to contribute 16,384 ETH over the next five years, aligning with the goal of optimizing current resources while expanding development horizons.

What new initiatives is the foundation pursuing?

The day before unveiling EPF7, the foundation published the inaugural Ecosystem Support Program grants for the first quarter of 2026. These grants support advancements in cryptography, zero-knowledge proofs, and fundamental protocol security. They fund initiatives such as EthereumJS infrastructure enhancements, performance tests simulating highloads, and client development for Fusaka transitions.

The foundation is recruiting interns for projects that emphasize protocol consensus, cryptography, and security. Further, the Ethereum Applications Guild has been established to drive the creation and support of Ethereum-based applications with practical impacts.

Foundation officials commented, “While resources devoted to core development are being managed cautiously, innovative projects in both protocol and application domains continue to receive funding.”
