Apple Inc. plans to upgrade its Siri voice assistant with a Google AI model. Following this partnership, the iPhone maker intends to allocate approximately $1 billion to Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., each year to acquire its advanced artificial intelligence model, which has 1.2 trillion parameters, according to sources close to the situation.
While remaining anonymous because the matter had not yet been made public, the sources hinted that both tech companies were close to securing an agreement that would allow the iPhone maker to utilize Google’s technology. This move was initiated after the tech firms thoroughly reviewed their partnership.
Apple seeks to remain competitive in the industry with several updates
Apple depends on Google to improve its Siri voice assistant and solidify its position as a leader in the tech industry. This is because Google’s artificial intelligence model is superior to Apple’s models as it features 1.2 trillion parameters, surpassing the company’s current capabilities. As individuals eagerly await the launch of Siri’s new features, sources indicate that the release is scheduled for next year.
The smartphone manufacturer’s decision came after considering using other third-party models for this task earlier. The company tried various models to find the most suitable one, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude.
After several considerations, Apple chose Google’s model earlier this year. Following this action, reports indicate that the tech giant’s goal is to employ this technology temporarily until its models become sufficiently robust.
Regarding Apple’s commitment to remain competitive in the industry, reliable sources pointed out that the updated version of Siri will be introduced next spring. However, the sources asserted that since the launch is still months away, partnership deals and plans may change before then.
This statement sparked heated discussions among individuals. Still, when reporters requested that representatives from Apple and Google comment on the situation, they chose not to respond.
Meanwhile, when this news update leaked on Wednesday, November 5, shares for both tech firms soared to their record high. To illustrate, Apple’s stock escalated by less than 1% to reach $271.70, while Alphabet’s stock surged as much as 3.2% to reach $286.42.
The new Gemini system represents a substantial upgrade from the existing model, featuring 150 billion parameters that Apple Intelligence utilizes in its cloud version. Analysts commented that this change will significantly improve the system’s capabilities, enabling it to handle complicated data and grasp context more effectively.

The project to enhance Siri with a third-party model is internally known as Glenwood. Currently, the initiative is under the leadership of Mike Rockwell, who developed the vice along with Craig Federighi, a Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at Apple, said sources.
The sources also mentioned that the new voice assistant, Linwood, is coming soon with iOS 26.4.
Under this partnership, Google’s Gemini model is responsible for Siri’s planner and summarizer functions. Notably, these two are the crucial parts that assist Siri in combining information and determining the best way to complete complicated tasks. Some Siri features will still utilize Apple’s own models.
Sources familiar with the situation mentioned that the model will operate on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers, safeguarding users’ information and keeping it separate from Google’s systems. The sources also hinted that the smartphone manufacturer has already reserved AI server hardware to back the model.
